Aluminium Welding & Fabrication
AWS aluminium metallurgy certified — the alloy dictates the approach.
Aluminium is the material that separates trained welders from the rest. It conducts heat roughly four times faster than steel, it does not change colour before it melts, its oxide layer melts far hotter than the base metal, and the alloy series determines whether the joint will retain strength or become the weakest point in the part.
The AWS aluminium metallurgy certificate behind this service is not decoration — it is the reason filler is chosen deliberately and heat input is managed instead of chased.
Filler selection is metallurgy, not preference
The common fillers behave very differently. One offers better ductility and crack resistance on the 6000-series extrusions used in trailers and frames; another gives higher as-welded strength but is more prone to cracking on certain base alloys, and can be sensitive to sustained elevated temperature.
Picking filler by whatever is on the shelf is how alloy repairs come back cracked. Base alloy is identified first, then the filler is matched to it and to the service conditions of the part.
Heat-affected zone softening
Heat-treated aluminium loses strength in the zone next to the weld — that is physics, not workmanship. Good practice minimises the affected width with tight heat control and correct travel speed, and where the design allows, joints are positioned away from the highest-stress section.
On critical parts, the effect is designed around at CAD stage rather than discovered in service.

On site versus shop work
Aluminium is the least forgiving material to weld in the field, because contamination and wind both attack the weld directly. On-site aluminium work always includes cleaning back to bright metal with tooling dedicated to aluminium, and a wind enclosure around the joint.
Where a part is heavily contaminated, previously repaired with brazing rod, or needs full preheat of a large casting, shop conditions genuinely produce a better result — and that will be said before the job starts rather than after.
