Core Welding Processes
MIG Welding
High deposition welding for production work, trailers and structural steel.
MIG (GMAW) puts down sound metal quickly, which makes it the workhorse for trailer frames, equipment brackets, structural steel and any job where there is a lot of joint to fill. Wire feeds continuously, so long runs stay consistent and there are no rod changes breaking the rhythm of a weld.
For most fabrication and repair work in carbon steel, MIG is the economical choice — it gets the customer back to work sooner without giving anything up on strength when the parameters and joint design are right.
Parameters, not guesswork
Wire diameter, gas mix, voltage, wire feed speed and travel angle all interact. Run too cold and the bead sits on the surface with no fusion — it looks fine and shears off under load. Run too hot on thin sheet and it burns through.
Every job starts with a parameter check on scrap of the same thickness where practical, so the settings on your part are proven rather than assumed.
Gas versus flux-cored on site
Solid wire with shielding gas gives the cleanest bead but is vulnerable to wind. Outdoors in an exposed yard, self-shielded flux-cored wire is often the more reliable choice because the shielding comes from the wire itself.
Which one is used on your job is a judgement call made at the site, based on wind, position and whether the finished bead needs to be cosmetically clean or painted over.

On site versus shop work
MIG on site means the engine drive and wire feeder come to the part, which is decisive when the part is a loader arm, a grain auger frame or a gate that is welded into a building. Nothing is cut apart and hauled to a shop.
Where shop work has the advantage is positioning: a shop can rotate a part to weld everything flat. In the field, out-of-position welding is normal, and technique and parameters are adjusted for vertical and overhead runs accordingly.
