Stainless steel is only stainless while its chromium oxide layer is intact. Weld it too hot, without back purging, or with carbon-steel-contaminated tooling, and the joint will corrode faster than the plain steel next to it. Every stainless job here is run on that principle.

That matters most in food, dairy and processing environments across Nebraska, where a corroded weld is a hygiene problem as well as a structural one.

Heat input, sensitisation and distortion

Austenitic stainless expands considerably more than carbon steel and conducts heat poorly, which means distortion appears fast if heat is dumped into one area. Sequenced, skip and back-step welding keeps panels flat.

Held too long in the sensitisation range, chromium carbides form at grain boundaries and strip the surrounding metal of its corrosion protection. Controlled interpass temperature and disciplined travel speed prevent it.

Purging and finishing

On tube and pipe where the inside surface matters, the root is back purged with argon so it does not oxidise into a rough, sugared surface that traps product and bacteria.

After welding, heat tint is removed and the passive layer restored by cleaning appropriate to the application, so the finished joint is as corrosion resistant as the parent material.

On site versus shop work

On-site stainless work uses tooling kept exclusively for stainless. Free iron from a carbon steel grinding disc or wire wheel will embed in the surface and rust within weeks, which is why cross contamination is the single biggest risk when welding stainless anywhere other than a clean shop.

Hot work inside food and processing facilities is carried out under OSHA hot work permitting practice, with fire watch and containment arranged with the site before an arc is struck.
