TIG (GTAW) is the most controllable arc process available, and it is the right call whenever the weld has to be clean, low-distortion and metallurgically sound. The torch delivers heat independently of filler metal, so the puddle can be walked slowly along thin wall tube without blowing through, and filler can be added a drop at a time.

That control is exactly what thin aluminium, stainless food-contact work, hydraulic lines, exhaust tube and cosmetic repairs need. It is slower than MIG, and it is worth it when a burned-through panel or a sugared stainless weld would cost more than the extra hour.

Where TIG earns its keep

Heat input is the whole game. Aluminium conducts heat away from the weld pool fast until the part saturates, then it collapses without warning. TIG lets amperage be tapered through a foot pedal in real time, so the puddle can be held steady as the part heats up.

On stainless, excessive heat destroys corrosion resistance and leaves a sugared, chromium-depleted weld. TIG with proper purging and controlled interpass temperature keeps the microstructure intact so the part does not start rusting from the inside of the joint.

Joint preparation is not optional

Most failed TIG welds are actually failed joint prep. Aluminium oxide melts at roughly three times the temperature of the aluminium under it, so every joint gets mechanically cleaned with dedicated stainless brushes and solvent before an arc is struck. Stainless gets its own tooling to avoid carbon-steel cross contamination.

Fit-up is checked before welding, not corrected with filler afterwards. A gap filled with extra rod is a weak weld dressed up to look finished.

On site versus shop work

On-site TIG needs wind control more than anything else. Shielding gas is what protects the puddle, and a light Nebraska breeze across an open yard will strip it away and leave porosity. Portable screening and enclosures go up before the machine is switched on.

Power, gas and consumables all come on the rig, so a farm shop or a fence line is workable. What changes versus shop work is set-up time: expect the first thirty minutes on site to go into shelter, cleaning and fit-up rather than arc time.
