Carbon Steel Welding & Fabrication
The structural backbone — welded to code standards, on your site.
Carbon and low-alloy steel is the material behind most of the structural and agricultural work in southeast Nebraska: trailer frames, implement hitches, beams, columns, gates, feed equipment and machine frames. It is forgiving compared to aluminium, but the higher the carbon and alloy content, the more the weld needs planning.
Weld a high-carbon or hardened section cold and fast and the heat-affected zone turns brittle, then cracks days later under vibration. Preheat, filler choice and cooling rate are what prevent that.
Preheat and hydrogen control
Thick sections and higher-carbon steels cool quickly and can form hard, crack-prone microstructures. Preheating slows the cooling rate and lets hydrogen escape before it causes delayed cracking — the failure that shows up a day after everyone has gone home.
Low-hydrogen consumables are kept dry and handled properly. Damp rod is a direct route to porosity and cracking in structural work.
Joint design and load paths
Weld size is specified for the load, not applied by eye. Oversized welds add heat, distortion and cost without adding strength; undersized welds fail. Fillet sizing, bevel preparation and full penetration where the load demands it are all decided up front.
Where a repeat failure indicates the original design was under-specified, a reinforced detail is drawn in CAD and agreed before fabrication.

On site versus shop work
Carbon steel is the most practical material to weld in the field: SMAW in particular tolerates wind, mill scale and less-than-ideal conditions far better than gas-shielded processes, which is why it is often the process of choice out in an open yard.
Shop work still has the edge for full-rotation fabrication and precise fit-up of large weldments. For repairs to installed structures, gates, machinery and trailers, on-site work saves the entire cost of transport and downtime.
