Core Welding Processes
Metal Repair & Welding Repair
Cracked, snapped or worn out — repaired where it broke, day or night.
Most call-outs start the same way: something structural cracked, and the machine or the gate or the trailer cannot be used until it is fixed. Repair welding is a different discipline to fabrication because the material history is unknown — previous repairs, unknown alloys, work hardening and fatigue all have to be read before the first arc.
Repairs are made to hold. That means finding why it broke, not just closing the gap where it broke.
Diagnose before repairing
A crack that runs from a sharp corner is a stress riser problem, and simply welding it shut guarantees it returns. A crack straight down an old weld usually means the original weld lacked fusion or the wrong filler was used. A crack across the parent metal beside a weld points at a heat-affected zone problem.
Each of those needs a different fix — gusseting and radiusing, full grind-out and rewelding with matched filler, or a preheat and controlled cooling approach. Reading the failure is the value of a trained welder over a hobbyist with a machine.
Grind out, do not cover up
Cracks are drilled at the tip to arrest propagation, ground out to sound metal in a prepared bevel, and rebuilt in passes. Welding across the top of a crack traps the defect underneath, where it keeps growing out of sight.
Where the underlying design was the problem, reinforcement is added — a gusset, a doubler plate or a redesigned bracket drawn in CAD — so the repair improves the part rather than resetting the clock on the same failure.

On site versus shop work
On-site repair is the entire point of a mobile rig. A cracked loader arm or auger frame does not have to be cut free, trailered and returned days later. Downtime measured in hours instead of days is often worth more than the weld itself, particularly during planting and harvest.
Shop work still wins where a part needs full rotation, extensive machining or a controlled preheat and slow cool that is impractical outdoors. That call is made honestly before work starts — if the field is the wrong place to do it properly, you will be told.
